Keep Diablo XS-225 w Tunze 9420.04 Hydrofoamer OR NYOS Quantum 160 for December build
Thanks to our nagging HOA, my wife and I have sold our home and are moving to a new home a few miles away. After much discussion I'm tearing down the tank completely and starting over. This time, no sand. I'm after more sump space though and access to changing the sump socks. I have a Ruby 36 sump which allows 2 socks but I only use 1 and change it every other day. I only use the 1 because my Diablo skimmer is in the way and getting to it would be a hassle.
I like the look of the NYOS Quantum 160 skimmers and yes it might be completely unnecessary to switch but I like new stuff and feel that new skimmer could save me some space and let me use both socks allowing better filtration for my next build. I've read a few threads on the Quantum Skimmers and they seem to have great reviews. Not to mention the massive thumbs-up I got from John at FAOIS the other day when asking about it. I currently have a Diablo XS225 that had been upgraded with a Tunze 9420.04 that skims wonderfully. I'll have a hard time parting ways with it actually as I feel it's quite unique and was the idea of the Fish Nazi himself when I brought it in for an upgrade. My next build will be SPS dominant, very few fish, a softball sized purple tip anemone w a clown pair, and 150+ lbs of live rock. The bottom will be Starboard so no sandbed this time around. My tank is a Marineland 150 and Ruby 36 sump. So my questions: Is it overkill to upgrade to the Quantum 160 from my current skimmer? Has anybody changed from the Diablo XS225 to the Quantum 160 and notice a difference in saving space? |
