240 gal glass support shelf

the glass shelf of my aquarium (top middle of tank) has two panels that are sandwiched together - the bottom panel is thicker than the top. The bottom measures about 3/8 and top 1/4. The top panel is cracked and I would like to remove it because the space between has become cloudy and blocks lighting. Does anyone know if this can be removed (at least the top thinner panel) or is it crucial to the structural integrity of the tank?

I would replace it.

Large tanks like that that let go can be catastrophic.

They may not have put it there just for looks, and better safe then sorry.
