Do RO membranes "break in"?

I just fired up my rodi system and bought a dual inline tds meter. I'm calculating my rejection at 96.5%. This is with a brand new dow filmtec 75 gpd membrane, I was under the impression that dow membranes were 98% efficient. Anyway should this improve as it breaks in or should I just be satisfied with this rejection?

96-98% so your fine, if you want a true 98%+ membrane you will need to look at hand tested membranes like the maxr membrane from buckeyehydro, and spectrapure also has one.

Water pressure, and temp can help the membrane also.

Ok thanks for the reply. I've got a booster pump on the system so pressure should be fine, incoming water is pretty cold up here so that may be affecting things then.

Cold water definitely will affect performance.

Water below 77F will INCREASE the rejection rate, but slow down production.

And yes - membrane performance improves in the first 6 to 24 hours of run time.

Thanks for the info Russ. I haven't had it running for 6 hours yet but rejection rate has consistently been around 97% so it's looking good so far.

97% is not uncommon. Sounds like you're fine.
