"Brand New Skimmer coming to Market"

These guys are doing a free demonstration/give away/ silent auction up by us. I'm not sure based on the design what is different that they are so hip on it, or why it is at all even better.

They say 0 maintenance but wouldn't you still have to clean the neck, empty etc.

Also would this design oxygenate the water since it seems to be using reclaimed air?

Whatta ya think

So what makes it so innovative?

I like how it's completely plug and play, and you don't need to adjust it (unless you do actually need to adjust it), and they've done away with those pesky valves. If you need to adjust it, you just open the lid, take out the float, adjust the height, and replace the float and lid...which, if you don't think about it, is much easier than turning a valve.

Well, I don't know about innovation, but I wonder how well it actually works.

I'm with you pledosophy, I can't help but think recirculating the air supply is not a good idea. Oxygenation is one of the more important functions of a skimmer for me.

IIRC don't Lifereef skimmers "recirculate" the air as well. I think it just keeps the venturi clean.

Yes, the Lifereef skimmers recirculate air to prevent venturi clogging. BTW, I'm not in the skimmer-as-oxygenater camp. It's one of those things that 'seems' like it ought to be true but I don't think it is. Rather like in the old FW hobby where the bubbling airstone was persistently thought to oxygenate the water - it does not; it mechanically moves water bringing stale layer to the surface where they absorb oxygen. I wonder if any studies have ever been done. A while back I measured DO on my tank with and without the skimmer running: no difference. Reality is that reef tanks are circulated so aggressively that saturation is likely leaving no incremental role for the skimmer. All my opinion, of course.

BTW, the ONLY skimmer mod that I have found effective in 20 years has been the neck cleaner. None of the other 'improvements' make any difference.

it seems like the difference is instead of turning a valve, the water level is set by an overflow standpipe inside the chamber. Doesn't seem that much easier really.
I guess by recirculating the air you can have a sealed collection cup, might be less stinky. But the air input inside the cup seems vulnerable to sucking foam, might clog. Is that how the lifereefs do it?
Other than that it looks like a hybrid external / internal where the water is pulled in from underneath the unit, so you have the height of an internal but unaffected by depth of water.

I'm attaching a breakout diagram from the patent http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-P...&RS=PN/9078419

Interesting. Can't seem to find a website, which in this day and age is strange.

I know what you mean, I had to watch it again, and again, and … well you get the point.

I'll watch it but I'm skeptical.
