Mag 5 too much?

I'm helping a friend set up a 28 bow front aquarium. Trying to help her with as much equipment that I can, because shes on a budget. I have a mag 5 that I'm not using since I upgraded to my 90. I think that plumbed in the tank the 5 would be too much. Just curious if anyone else had any different thoughts on that? I was thinking I could use the 5, just plumb it with a T and ball valve that leads back to head of the sump. Is there any other ways of running this pump on a 28 BF? Or should I start looking for her a smaller pump like the mag 3? My measurements show about 4 foot of head loss, so with 2 90s the 5 would be at 280ish gph the 3 would be 240ish gph. Thanks in advance

Mag 5 would be fine. With the head pressure you wont be getting near the flow and even if you did you can dial it back with a valve. Can always Y it off and add multiple returns.
