HOB Filter

I currently have a 90 gal reef tank, with a 30 gal. fuge. I would like to get rid the fuge & add a HOB filter. My question is this, is there one large enough to handle a tank of this size, or would I be better off using 2 smaller ones that add up to that many gallons. Thank you in advance.

Most hobbyists move in the other direction adding a sump or refugium to an existing tank for the wealth of benefits these provide. Moving to an HOB filter would be a step backwards IMHO. That being said, Aquaclear makes an HOB filter rated to 100g. Also HOB protein skimmers; however most HOB skimmers are junk and not worth the money. You could set up an external recirculating skimmer. That would probably be the best option if you get rid of your refugium. Or turn your refugium into a sump.

Good Luck!

First Contact, thank you for your reply & I totally agree with you but I am dealing with a totally enclosed stand, girl friend issues, odor & girlfriend issues & mildew & girl friend issues, if you get my drift. Before anyone comments, NO the odor & mildew are not from my girl friend....lol

You might want to try a canister filter instead.

i used emperor 400s over 10 years ago, if you do add a hang on back expect it to fling water above and behind it with those units. not sure on the aquacleare. I current am running a hob skimmer on my 350g system that works just fine.

i use the 2000. had that thing on a 200g as well and it worked wonders. I have to clean it daily though because of its rating, but if your worried about smell, than cleaning daily is a must on any skimmer imo.

So can you do it? Of course, and you can run your system well. My emperors collected all my uneaten food and non dissolved poo. Just like the fancy new roller mats, except i had to take them out and rinse them with my sink sprayer.

Good luck.

Are you running any GAC? Along with helping your water's clarity, it will also help to mitigate any slight odors you may notice. Can you add a fan to the stand(even a clip on)? As far as a HOB skimmer I would suggest the RO BH90

I have a FX6 canister on my 90g reef tank and a HOB skimmer. I am not having any problems. I do 10% water change per week and clean the canister 1 per month

Tell girlfriend to shut up or take a hike. Problem solved, HOB Filter would do nothing but take your tank a step back.
