40 gallon breeder return pump size

What are you guys running? I have an Aqueon AQ1700, just standard from petco, and its 264-449gph. Someone who has not been in the aquarium hobby for 20 plus years but is a government engineer told me my pump was too small. What should I be aiming for?

Thanks!

For a decent flow its mainly measured by water volumex10 so 400-600 GPH sounds about a decent flow for you

Some people run high, but all you really need is about 3-5x the tank volume per hour on the return pump. Yours is just fine.

True, i do also have a barebottom tank so running on the high scale of flow is helpful to keep my bottom clean of debris and waste
