Rock falling apart

Quick question, I have a small piece of rock in my tank (along with 28 more pounds) that seems to be falling apart? It's almost sand-like when it comes off and makes my water look almost cloudy. PH is at 8.0. Any ideas of what could cause this? I used a turkey baster to try and clean it off but it just keeps coming and coming, I just stopped after a few times bc it was getting pretty bad.

All 28 pounds are falling apart or just the single rock? Where did you get it from? Is it possible that there was a creature on it (sponge etc) that is dead now and turning to powder? Does it look like a hole bored by a bivalve mollusk? Post a pic

Do you use RODI? How long have you had the rocks in the tank?

It's just the one rock, and it's been in there for about a month. I got it from my LFS. It was dry rock when I got it so there was no growth. It's not a hole it's the whole top of the rock. I'll post a pick asap.

I've never seen live rock do that. I would say you deserve your money back on that one.

BTW your rock stacking looks to be possibly unstable and a fall can often really hurt tank animals. Just wanted to give you a heads up.

I bought some shelf rock a while back and it broke apart into smaller pieces after several months. I think there's man made stuff out there thats just plain weak.

Probably just a fluke as mentioned above. Doubtful a powerhead could cause erosion in such a short period of time. Hopefully the LFS lets you swap it out!

Yea sounds about right, I just too it out and counted it as a loss. Thanks for the insight!
