Life Rock artificial coloring = bad?
Hi,
I'm about to take out all of my currently caulerpa infested rock (which is most of my rock) and replace it with Life ROck. I'm concerned b/c life rock is colored. Will this in any way harm reef inhabitants. And, no, i'm not concerned about the shock my remaining corals etc will go through. As all the corals will be dead soon, as it's in another bad cycle, I believe caused by all the nuisance macro algae infesting the rock. BTW i'm at 0 ppB phospate, and undecteable nitrate. So that's not my issue :-D Thanks! |

If I put much of the rock I have with caulerpa in my fuge, will the caulerpa make spores or something that will spread back to the tank? If so, is there a way to prevent this. If I can put at least some of my rock I have in there and let the tank acclimate to the new Life Rock, that will be the best situation. I know the caulerpa can also break off and get back to the tank. I'll have to put some time of mesh over the out flow from the fuge (which is like an overflow).

If the colored coating hurt corals do you actually think they would still be selling that rock?
and yes you can put the caulerpa in your "fuge" and if you run lights 24/7 it won't go sexual.. an abundance of macro algae won't cause a tank to crash or any other "bad" things other than it being unsightly.. Not sure why you think everything will just die soon..

I have some of the Caribsea Life rock in my tank and it works quite well. It's aragonite based and the purple pigment used is completely safe in your tank. Hope that helps.

It might not make sense, but whnever I pull out as much caulerpa as I can along with the smallest of water changes (5 gallons) to syphon out the caulerpa, the corals look much better. They caulerpa is growing righa aroudn and on the corals it's an infestation. And I have no idea why they would sell it if it was harmful. Ask any number of companies selling food with chemicals in it to humans why they sell their products. lol
And thanks Gimpy and mcgyvr But What i'm going to do is get about 50# of Branching LifeROck, and cycle it in my 20 gallon long tank, along with some small fish in it. And then trade it out for my caulerpa rock in my tank. |

Just get a foxface, he'll clean it up. That is if the tank is big enough.
