well.. center gives you the best hope of surface skimming the whole tank.. vs it puddling up on one side vs the other..

Personally..On a 6ft tank I wouldn't do anything but a full coast-coast overflow..
Or a 4ft or a 3ft tank

my tank is 84 inches long 7 feet x 32 inches deep custom built..

I have mine running from center of the tank toward the left if your facing the tank.. the weir is 1 1/2" D 7"tall and 32 inch Long it has no teeth. The water just drops into a exterior box that is a bit longer.I put it offset because on the far right of the tank is where my return from sump water drops in. For it was because of how access to the rear of the tank is.. I have a door behind the tank in the bathroom to reach half of the tank the other half is behind the bathroom sink.. so i was limited on space..

i also think having it offset and the return from sump 1 1/2 inch pipe being all the way to the right. keeps water moving on surface well . i also feed at the front right of the tank. This gives the fish time to get the food before it gets to the over flow.
There is really not a wrong way to go except making it too small
