Rare Fish Selection

If money wasn't a problem, what fish(es) would you put in a 40 gallon tank with ton of flow (helpful for fish that need ton of swimming room/resistance flow).

Go!

I'm thinking.... Candy Basslet?

Tank size being the obviously limiting factor I think that's the best option, deep water candy basslet for sure. Not sure what other options there would be, but that would be the fish I'd pick. Though there probably is some rare wrasse that may be ok in a tank that size.

Why not just get a bigger tank?

How about a Peppermint Angel? Maxing out at under three inches, it'll probably do fine in a 40. I think a 40 would be too small for most rare Wrasses. I would recommend a Leafy Seadragon if it wasn't for the high flow.

More realistically, the Candy Basslet is the best pick I can think of. A Helfrichi Firefish would be cool too, but not sure if it's rare enough for you.

Size is definitely THE limiting factor. I am hoping that larger fish (obviously not too big) will be okay given that they have enough resistant flow to swim against. Flow may also be a factor since tiny gobies might just fly away... Wrasses are probably a no go since I am open top.

While it sounds nice, I am not going with a bigger tank since I am not fully settled down and do not want to start a big project and have to uproot everything. Plus, I don't have the time nor dedication for a larger tank given other activities I pursue.

I think I may be on the right track... I would consider a rare angel but have no idea where to source them...

Try Jordan from Among the Reef. I got a few rare Wrasses from him for decent prices. Plenty of guys here had good experiences with him as well.

I wouldn't put anything rare or expensive in an open aquarium.

Haha, I can see why... one jump and there you go~ But to each his own I suppose; risks mean different things to everyone.

Sorry buddy, but regardless of feelings or risk factor, it's just not a wise decision.

I've never had a jumper myself, but I've seen so many I made sure to get a screen just in case. Hopefully due to that, I will continue to not have a jumper

Looks like selection options are pretty narrow...

I just lost my supermale pintail fairy wrasse.. this guy jumped out of a crack in between my net top.. like hairline crack that somehow got bigger and he squeezed through..

then next day my male Earlie wrasse jumped out from same spot!

so no more DIY screen tops for me. customizing one

Had a $600 angelfish go carpet surfing. Cat freaked out (he doesn't like fish). I came down to see wth was going on, saw the fish. Horrified I picked the fish up... it started to squirm. Tossed it back in, it didn't swim away, turns and looks at me through the glass...

Net covers went on the same day. Will never run them without covers again. It's just too hard to get healthy livestock.

Depends what you mean by rare? Candy basslet isn't rare per Se, just tricky to collect thus the high price.
