That boneheaded move that killed one of your favorite corals

So back in the day I had this gorgeous yellow Goniopora stokesi. Dude was awesome, wavying around in the current on my sandbed. Many people talked about how hard it was to keep at the time, so once I hit my 2 year mark, I felt like the king of the world.

And then a few months later while working on my tank I noticed one of the drop ceiling panels was shifted and off the railings, so no big deal, just tip it up and lay it back in!

When I tipped it from below, something rolled off the tile and sploosh, fell into the tank....

As soon as I heard the water splash I ran to the front of the tank and was like "NOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooo" all slow motion like as I watched a big flashlight Sparta itself into the top of the coral. Exactly, in the top middle.

Turns out years ago, I was fishing cable in the drop ceiling and happened to forget my heavy duty steel flashlight on that tile.

WHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.

Sure enough, where the flashlight hit, it totally damaged the tissue, the surrounding area went brown and RTN set in.

To this day, I shed a tear every time I use that darn flashlight.

Anyone else had wondrous luck at killing something they loved? lol

Used a product to rid my tank of algae, this product has a thread here on RC that goes back several years. No one reported coral loss. I unfortunately lost all my acans, all at the same time. Only thing that changed in my tank was the addition of this product.

If I just used the tried and trued methods we all know works, instead of some "miracle" cure, I would more then likely still have the 10 or so frags of acans I had.

Cleaning a handgun, failed to wash my hands, noted that my pistol shrimp had burried a zoanthid plug, reached in to free it up.

Dead tank.

I was once adding in new live rock. After setting everything up and gluing my gorgeous gorg to the top I left it overnight. Saw in the morning that somehow the rock fell... with the gorg on the bottom. The entire thing was crushed... still kills me to this day.

One of the cruel ironies of reefing is that the frag most likely to fall down behind the rocks is your favorite. It's then decision time as to whether to dismantle the rock structure or not. Razor blade graveyard as well.

Turned all of my in-tank pumps off while I was kalking some zoas. Left them off overnight and sump got low, return pump did not get enough water back into the display and tank got low on oxygen. Did not lose any coral, but did lose a 10 year captive Powder Blue Tang that was absolutely beautiful. I fortunately caught it before anybody else died, but most of the fish were struggling to get breath. I have the other fish years later, but it was totally my fault and I still feel bad about it.

I have left a frag or two in a bag floating and forgot about them for a few days. Nothing super nice to remember or mention, but I have done it and feel stupid. I don't fee as bad about frags as I do the fish.

I didn't kill my monti, but successfully broke off 90% of it. I was trying to catch a goby, I went for a quick strike and broke my monti into 3 pieces, they are all still with me, but I am definitely sad as my monti was growing very nicely
