Chiller q

So I'm definitely going to need a chiller for my new tank, and I'm wondering, how do you guys handle the in/out flow? Do you have special holes drilled in the tank for it or do you run it out of and back into your sump?

Return pump through the chiller and into the tank where it can quickly dissipate. I don't like chillers with internal thermostats because of this - last piece of equipment to get cool. I keep the temp probe on my Ranco in the tank.

Thanks I never would have guessed running it like that. I plan on having both the heater and chiller plugged into an Inkbird so I shouldn't have any problems with temperature control.

I have a 4 chambered sump and chiller pulls from section where skimmer returns and drops in recirculation section of sump. This way water is always mixed when it goes back into dt.

Cool... I'm Curious, do most larger chillers have a built in pump or do you have to purchase one?

I don't know of any chillers that have built-in pumps. I have a 1hp and a 1/3hp on 2 different systems and they both run off the return pump manifold with a gate valve for control.

So it doesn't matter that the water flows through the chiller at a fast rate from the return pump? Or is the what the valve is for?

Chillers have a recommended flow rate from the manufacturer. You must maintain these rates for efficiency

That is what a gate valve does. Don't go the cheap route and get a ball valve, they give far more crude control and get stuck as they age. Ge a gate valve and very precise control is easy.

The valve will also allow you to keep your system running while you stop the flow to the chiller should the need arise to work on it.

Thank you.
