Need advice on new tank overflow/return plumbing
I have just acquired my second tank(125g) and need some advice on how to do the overflow and return plumbing. The tank has 3 pre-drilled hols in the bottom of the built in overflow box. There is one 2 1/4" and two 1 3/4 holes. Images attached and tank is upside down.
I am not sure what type of overflow system to use and if these should all be dedicated for the overflow or if one of these should be for the return pipe. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! |

You can either use all 3 holes for a bean animal drain and find a different way to do your return line. You could also use 1 of the holes for the return and use a herbie overflow with the other two holes.
Personally, I went with the bean animal and used all 3 holes for drains, but lots of people use a herbie overflow too. Your choice really. |

Bean animal overflow and return pipe over the top of the tank.

herbie all the way.. Less plumbing , neat look , less complicated. But of-course, your choice.

It would be bean for me.. Larger of the 3 being for the emergency line..
Then returns up/over the back.. In case you don't know what a bean is.. http://www.beananimal.com/projects/s...ow-system.aspx This is a bean with an internal coast-coast overflow.. The "bean" aspect of it is just the 3 pipe concept..

I would plug the holes in the sides of the overflow box or replace it.

Thank you all for the advice. I think I am going to try the 3 pipe bean animal system.
