Stocking 40 gallon breeder

In the process of starting a 40 gallon reef tank and just wondering if my stocking plan was good and wound work for this tank

2 ocellaris clowns
2 fire fish
3 blue green reef chromis
Maybe 1-2 banggai cardinalfish if I'm not overstocking already
I will be buying the fish from petco because that the only place to carry saltwater fish within 100 miles of me the fire fish and clownfish will probably not be a bonded pair but probably come out of the same tank will it still work not being a bonded pair

It’s ok if they are not bonded. They will pair up in your tank but you might see some fightings which is ok. I only have 20 gallon with three fish in it so I can’t say much about your stocking list. But with those 7 fish you already have on your list, a 40 gallon would be quite well-stocked for my taste.

I would nix the green chromis and go with the cardinalfish. I certainly wouldn't do both, in a 40 breeder the 6-7 fish will have it fairly well stocked.

What are you running for a skimmer? Do you have a sump?

Getting a fish from Petco isn't taboo you just need to make sure you have a good QT protocol in place. Even though they may be coming from the same tank and they may, at the time, look healthy you still want to make sure you put them through TTM then in a QT for no less than 2 weeks and either during the TTM or the 2 week QT put them through a Prazipro treatment.

I had gotten a yellow tang from Petco, he had some spots on him so immediate started TTM and while he was going through TTM I treated him with Prazi. Even though I couldn't see anything visible on him you wouldn't believe the amount of stuff that came off of him. So trust me treat with prazi at some point during your QT you will be thankful that you did.

Only get one firefish, they may be alright at first but sooner or later you will only have one left.

So what if I add just 1 fire fish and 1 banggai cardinal instead of 2 firefish

Sounds like a better plan, get rid of the chromis as suggested, keep the clowns, and you could do a blenny of some sort. With that list you'd be alright although keeping in mind those two clowns once a matter pair could decide the entire tank is there's.
