Eshopps overflow gurgling
I have an eshopps pf-800 hang on overflow that I just installed on my new 75. It is making a terrible gurgling noise and the water level in the rear section fluctuates pretty often. I read that a hofer gurgle buster would make it noticeably quieter. So I went to lowes today and bought the stuff to make one. Messed with it and changed it and tried multiple things to get it to work. Still gurgles the same. Anyone have this problem or know a solution? I would be greatly appreciative because the noise is driving me crazy. Thanks

You are likely just running too much flow through it..
You will need to put a valve on the output of your pump to throttle it back some.. Or if you have a DC pump turn it down some until the gurgling goes away..

Sounds like you are getting air in the drain piping. Pics of the setup will help.

And FYI.. Both DesertReef and I are saying the same thing..
Too much flow = water no longer just clings to the inside surface of the pipe = sucks air down with it

Is the hofer gurgle buster the same thing as a stockman standpipe? I'm using the same overflow and built a stockman for my 75g and I get no noise at all. It has to be quite because the tank is right next to where I watch TV, the only sound I get is the very faint sound of the water going down the drain pipe, barely audible. I'll take a short video of it when I get home to give you an idea. |

IMO that overflow is way to small. I dont like the U tube style overflows at all, too failure prone and large ugly things. I used a simliar one on a 29g and had issues with it and almost had some floods. If possible get an Eclipse L and drill the tank. The L has 3 drains and can be setup so its dead silient. I always recommend having more drainage than you need. I am setting up a 75g and will be using the Eclipse L setup with a bean animal.

Here is short video of the Pf800 at work. To give you an idea of how quite it is the TV you hear is in the kitchen in another room. Been using this for 2.5 years without an issue and have fail-safes for floods. As long as it is rated for the size tank and set up properly you shouldn't have any problems. Didn't drill this one because I just bought the tank and stand and wasn't absolutely sure it wasn't tempered and didn't want to take a chance. If I upgrade or start another tank it will be drilled. Like the clean look of a drilled tank.
