Zoa reaching

I’m not sure what type of zoa this is but it is the only one in the tank that looks like it’s reaching. I have a kessil a80 running at 100% with moderate flow. Other zoas in same position aren’t extending. Can someone tell me what type of zoas I have and why this one is extended out?-cdn.com/20180227/e69105a5533a90b3665bbe1e8403c5e1.jpg[/IMG]

long stems means they are straining for more light. they are growing taller to get closer to the light. up your light output a bit and they will multiple sideways and overtake a LR.

not to hurt any kessel-lovers out there but i dont like kessels bc they are like floodlights spotlighting a 1x1 area. everything outside that the PAR drops off too quick. i've been told by more than one person (very very experienced professionals) that Kessel began in hydroponics and their lights are really meant for growing plants...hence the spotlighting effect. they have adapted their spotlight design to diversify into reefing to make more profit....which to me is fitting a circle-into-a-sqaure and not engineering a reef coral light from the ground up

I like the Kessils, not my favorite but I really like them. They're no different from any other point source LED right? Sure they have a tight LED cluster but they do offer some spread. Your a80 isn't one of Kessil' s strongest lights but you can try moving those zoas up to the top of your tank. I have a couple colonies that like it near the top of the tank, others like it on the bottom.

They are probably reaching but I had the same looking ones before and they seemed to have longer stalks naturally.

Some stretch out like that while others don't. In general zoas will stretch out like that when they want more light, however, there are some that just have longer stalks in that way. The picture of the ones reaching remind me of my gobstoppers that always have and I assume always will stretch their legs as it were, even though they were just a few inches under the lights. All in all I'd say you have very nice and healthy looking colonies of zoas. Happy reefing!

Thinking that's a Paly and not a zoo. Paly tend to reach for light more as their stocks are longer. Careful if that's a Paly, can be toxic to you if in anyway ingested....

Yes be careful with both palys and zoas

Go search and read The Reef Central story where a guy took an entire live rock covered with Zoaa and cooked/boiled the LR in a pot on a stove and nearly killed everyone in his family when the toxins went Airborne throughout the whole house . They all had to be rushed to the nearest emergency room

Plus one on this. Gobstoppers do indeed stretch a bit. Mine started out stretched to the max like this and without changing light parameters they eventually acclimated over a few months and now stretch a bit but seem to have matriculated just fine. I wouldn't worry about it. The little guy looks very healthy to me. enjoy
