Best option for cleaning bare bottom aquarium?
Hello,
In your experience, what is the best option for cleaning and removing small particles/detritus from a bare bottom reef tank? This is my first bare bottom tank and it is very obvious that my syphon hose won't pick up anything. Thank you! |

Better flow directed at the bottom. That will assist in keeping the detritus fully suspended as is the intent of the bare bottom.

I take a turkey baster and blow the rocks and bottom before a water change. Then just siphon out as much as a I can from the water column. I will also take the siphon and run it along the bare bottom and try to get into any tough spaces to grab any trapped detritus

Siphon and good waterflow. If doing things over, I would not have gone with fine sand but either bigger crushed coral or bare bottom.

Me 5. Did bare bottom for a while and hated it, back to sand. You needs lots of flow in the tank, lots of flow across the bottom and run filter socks to remove the waste.
