What does a water change add to your tank?

What exactly does a water change add. I know that it can take away bad stuff like nitrate or phosphate, but what exactly does it add to the tank? I've read online that water changes can add beneficial stuff back into your tank.

Hi....it adds back in trace elements that get used up by coral and other inhabitants in your tank...in my opinion water changes are the most important maintenance one can do on their tank....

Very nice article. Funny I have not done a water change in 3 months due to rotator cuff surgery, but everything is still going strong. Coral still extended and colorful and parameters are still in check. I haven't slowed down on the feeding neither.
