Garlic

I've always used garlic extreme. Can I use fresh garlic? If so do you just crush it? I have a garlic press I could use. Does it make a difference if small pieces get in the tank? Thanks

You should be able to crush it and use it. People have done that to try to control intestinal parasites.

Garlic gives me serious heartburn, but I can take Tums for that. What do you give your fish with the same issue?

Pepto fishmal, I like that.
I buy the big container of garlic at wal mart, crushed, for cooking and the fish. The stuff for the fish, I have mashed and sometimes just used the juice from the jar mixed with the food. Have not done it in awhile, but the fish loved it.

When I am cooking I just mince up some extra garlic and throw it in there. The fish love it. They all get very excited. Especially the tangs and my blenny.

Garlic Extreme and other garlic products from the LFS are a bit expensive, especially for the small amounts you get. I just get mine from Wal-Mart.

I actually read somewhere, and I believe it, that it is better to use fresh garlic vs. garlic extreme. I have been only feeding the clown in my qt tank mysis shrimp soaked in zoe and garlic guard and she absolutely loves it and has noticably improved over a week and half.

I have used garlic (fresh pressed and soaked), did not really notice any difference in the fish (wrong problem) but they do love it.

you can also get pre-minced garlic in a jar from grocery store. Works good! I have been seeing more and more dry products having garlic in it too.

Some fish seem to like the taste, and there is some evidence that garlic might help reduce parasites in the digestive tract.

It was my understanding that the benfits of garlic have not yet been conclusively proved. But it is used in the food of fish to boost the resitance of the fish to certain parasites.

I have soaked bits of fresh garlic and water. Added shrimp and clams in. Let sit for an hour and fed.

Does it matter if small pieces of garlic go into the tank when you feed? I've been using a garlic press and add it to the food. When I feed the small bits float around for a while. The fish always taste it but don't appear to eat it

I mash up 2 or 3 heads of garlic at a time, throw it in a ziplock and freeze it. Whenever I need garlic to add for fish food (or my food), I just break a piece off. Works great and it keeps indefinately.

A few pieces of garlic in the tank probably won't hurt anything. I wouldn't worry about it.
