Carbon Reactor
Considerations for use:
Reef Carbon is also soft (this is due to pore size and makeup) and could release dust into the system if mechanically stirred too rapidly. Do not place where water will drop a large distance directly onto the product or churn it violently. Because Reef Carbon is so active, you can use considerably less than with other carbons (about 1/4 lb. or 1 cupful per 100 gallons of tank capacity, you may need more or less depending on how dirty the tank is). Reef Carbon will have done its job, so dose the tank with Kent Marine Essential Elements, Discus Essential, Freshwater Essential, or A F Cichlid Rift Lake Trace Elements as appropriate for your type of system to restore trace elements removed by any carbon. CAUTION: Recent products introduced by other manufacturers that contain strong enzymes may dissolve the binder that holds Reef Carbon together. If this happens the carbon can come apart and cause an ugly mess in your tank. Because of this, DO NOT USE ENZYME PRODUCTS WITH Reef Carbon! Simply remove the carbon, use the product, then replace the carbon several days later. ARIGHTY THATS PRETTY MUCH THE DIRECTIONS I GUESS MY QUESTION IS IN THE PHOSBAN REACTOR FULL OF KENTMARINE CARBON WITH A RIO 180, IS THIS TOO MUCH CARBON?, I JUST TURNED OFF MY PUMP TO THE REACTOR CAUSE I READ THE DIRECTIONS SO I WAS AFRAID THAT I WAS REMOVING TRACE ELEMENTS, O YA AND MY SKIMMER STOP SKIMMING, MAY BE A INDICATION THAT IT REMOVED ALOT OF ORGANICS I GUESS. |

Did you flush the media before you added it to your tank?

Im using a phosban reactor with activated carbon
my reactor is about half full for my 90 gallon it does remove trace elements but you get those back by doing water changes and additives the pros of running carbon out weigh the cons in my opinion plus the carbon makes for nicer looking water and tank display |

Sometimes when you add carbon to a system that has been without it for a while you can put things in 'shock' since carbon will quickly absorb impurities. Also could be the carbon dust got back into the sump from not being flushed out prior (as I mentioned above) and that can cause some odd stuff in the system -- e.g. causing your skimmate production to temporarely stop.

Good to hear. Just keep up your scheduled maintenance (water changes, etc) and you will be fine.

Hey J,
Can you post a pic of your phosban reactor with both media in it. I was thinking of doing the same thing. Also, what pump are you using for the reactor? Thanks Quote:

I'm wondering if you could use both carbon and phosban in one reactor (assuming they are both in micron bags).

The pump I'm using is a minijet 404, works fine but next time I will buy the 606, needs a little more flow.
