Anemone ID?

I am 80% sure this is a cool looking bubble tip anemone.. or maybe I just think it looks cool. The clowns love it anyways.. I have never seen them go so crazy on an anemone before. Anyways.. here are some (bad) pictures.. Thanks .

Top down.. the green in person is a really nice neon green.. halides wash out the shot though.

Thanks,
Scott

Only for two days. It really does not resemble a BTA to me, and I have kept numerous amounts of BTA's/RBTA's. This one does not have bubble tips.. or bubble-like tips. They are like shown all the time. They do stub up a bit when I turn the lights on , but then go a little longer.

The colour of the foot is white, if that helps.

Thanks,
Scott

I am leaning toward H. crispa as well, judging by the column. Is there any way you can get a pic of the underside of the disc? That would be much more definitive as far as an ID goes.

Also, just to note. This anemone seemed pretty sticky (used gloves to put it in tank) But it seemed pretty sticky.

If it is crispa, can sebae's have a dark brown/maroon/DARK purple with green tips? I thought they only came in purple, white and tan colours??

Underside of the disk.. excuse my ignorance. Would that mean taking a photo underneath the anemone? Like a photo of it's foot??? Sorry for the dumb question.

Sorry for not being clear. What I was referring to was the oral disc, as in the area directly beneath the tentacles. The upper part has tentacles, the lower part is the "underside."

And yes, they come in quite a multitude of colors. Purple, tan, and (white being bleached) are simply the most common.

Oh okay , very cool.. although I am HOPING it's not a sebae as I only have a 20g tank It was traded to me as a BTA.

Unfortunately I can't take a picture right now as I am at work. But I will definately do so when I am home. I'd really like to know what kind of anemone I have in my tank now haha! The clowns love it.. they go crazy for this guy.. it's nice to see. They have never appeared so "happy" with an anemone, as compaerd to BTA's.

Anyways.. thanks for all your help so far.

if it is a crispa, good luck keeping it

I dont know of them living too long in closed systems, esp. a 20g tank

no offense, ...

Well, it may very well be a sebae, but I have completely ruled out BTA. The reason I need a shot of the underside is to determine whether it is H. crispa (bad) or H. magnifica (worst). That pic will tell all.

Well then.. let me clarify in saying the anemone was introduced two nights ago. It looked great being introduced and even better only 20 minutes later.. it hasn't moved at all, and looks very happy and healthy. It must be doing ok... I have an SPS tank so I know my paramters are good.

I have ruled out BTA as well because I just got a PM from the person who traded me and he said his maroon did not host the anemone.... maroon's go bonkers for BTA's , correct? But his Clarkii (weird) , percula, and ocellaris have hosted it.

I'll try my luck with it for a while.. if it goes downhill, off it goes... but if it grows and thrives... well I could be looking at a species only tank!

Looks like a H.magnifica at a glance. Could be a crispa though.

Definately not a BTA.

This is not true at all. Healthy specimens, as of date, have nearly indefinite lifespans. I have had mine for a decade (H. crispa) and there are others who have had ones even longer.

Like I mentioned earlier, get the underside of the disc--maybe even slightly disturb it to make it close some so that you can get a clearer picture.
For example

See how you can see the detail of the disc's underside? All those features are important for ID.

Alright. I took some pictures, but they aren't the greatest. This guy didn't want to close up... I turkey basted him.. rubbed it a bit.. and this is all I got. Hopefully it helps.. I'll keep an eye on it after lights out and see if it closes up or not.

Hope this helps..

Scott

Going from your excellent pics (great job, BTW), I would have to say that it is H. magnifica. If you look in my pic, H. crispa has numerous, very adhesive 'bumps' called verrucae, while H. magnifica has none. It definitely one of the more difficult anemones to keep, needing high light and flow. A good feeding regimen helps as well. All I can say is good luck and I hope it does well for you, as it seems to be doing so now.

Hmm, magnifica eh.. well just note that the pictures of the foot are with flash. I don't know if that makes any difference or not.

So far the anemone is at the highest point in my tank directly under a 150w DE. It is not recieving strong flow however. I can fix that no problems though. It also has not moved one inch from it's original placement either. So thumbs up there...

I am going to try my hardest to keep this guy happy and healthy. But as of right now.. I must be doing something right as I have never seen it look bad yet.
