temperature

I have a question on the temp in my tank

I currently do not have a chiller on my system but do have a fan in the canopy (not runningon these tests)

when my lights go out the tank temp is 83 when they come on in the morn it is77 I am affraid if I turn the heater up enough to keep it warm over night that during the day the heat will go past 83 since it will be starting from a warmer temp???

also my ph is 8.3 lights out and 8.0 lights on is this ok?

5 degree swing is too much IMO. Most heaters turn off after they reach the designated temperature I thought. I don't think that the Ph is too much of a swing but you may want to check your alk. If that's too low then your buffering for lots of parameters are in trouble too.

6 degrees may be a lot, but over the course of a day, maybe not. Some will say it's a big deal, I don't think it is. Just monitor your fish and corals. If they seem to be doing okay, don't sweat it. On a day off or something, I'd raise the temp at night, (I did this once) and the temp did NOT go higher during the day. It doesn't just constantly heat up, the temp usually stablalizes at some point. (lights, temperature in the room, circulation, evaporation, etc, all plays into where your temperature settles.) Give it a try if the swing bothers you.

Many tanks are around the same as far as temp drop. Its better to keep it closer around 3 degrees. Get the fans going or put a fan facing the sump and turn the heater on at night. see what happens.

There are articles debating this subject. I just say if everything is healthy and happy then leave it alone.

having your heaters heat during the night won't change your top temp during the day. It will change how fast it gets to that temp. That is assuming your temp reaches it's peak sometime before the lights go back off. If it is still rising at that point all bets are off. Shouldn't be though. My tank reaches 85 when the chiller kicks in at about 4 in the afternoon. If i set the chiller for 86 it won't come on till about 7 or so. My tank maxes out around that time. Tank swings from about 81 to 85. I would prefer it to be cooler but heard that the higher temps aren't dangerous and saves me chiller time this way.
