What bulb/K for a Frag tank, if you don't care how the light looks?

I was talking with a fellow reefer today, and he mentioned that if you want the best growth for a frag tank, use a 6500K bulb. They're not the prettiest bulb in my opinion, but for a frag tank where I'm only interested in growth...what the heck.

Any opinions?

you will get faster growth but may also alter what their coloration. IMO since more than likely the frags are less than 6-12 inches below the surface having a 10k or even a 20k won't slow them down that much.

I would have to agree with szwab. My frag tank is only 12" tall and the frags are a few inches off the floor of the tank. They grow plenty fast enough under the 20k and look nice too

What made you pick a 20k over a 10k for the frag tank?

I like for the coral to color up as well as grow. I use 400 watt 20k with no actinic. I am not a fan of any of the 10k bulbs, even with actinic.

I run mine about 8 hours per day. Corals in a frag tank have the same needs as corals in the display aquarium

They're readily available on www.acropora.net (Reef Exotics). I got mine from PGS (www.pacificgardensupply.com) when I bought my Lumenarc. Supposedly PA has them as well. They make both a SE and DE version. I have the SE, it's an excellent bubl. E-pals of mine have the DE version and like it as well. I've converted at least 5 or 6 reefers in my local club to the Reeflux 10k.

Will edit in the thread URLs in a sec.

PGS didn't have them in their computer but mentioned them when I bought my system from them. Call during business hours.
