I've had two before i a FOWLR "fish only with live rock" tank. Never had an anemone. My clowns at night would just go to the front right corner of my tank and try to host in the sand. They had this small section of the sand where they always hung out, almost like they had an imaginary anemone. Shouldn't have a prob. having clowns with out an anemone but it does help.

I think there's a belief that one needs the other to survive, which is not true in your tank environment. Clownfish will host in just about anything... if they choose to. Anenomes will do fine alone and probably would fair better without a Clown always beating them up. They can be very rough on Anenome's sometimes and cause them a lot of stress. You should do some serious reading on Anenome's before getting one though. It'll save you a lot of grief. |

I just got my first pair of clowns a week ago. I don't have an anemone YET but I've been reading up on different things like how often the different species move around, what they like to eat, things like that so that when I get one and it roams around my soon to be reef tank it doesn't destroy a TON of things. Just some food for thought.
One other thing is that I agree with crzy4reefs, my clowns hosted my heater and would sleep between the suction cups and the heater at night. I added a frogspawn colony and then they hosted to that, and I just added a large pom pom xenia and now they have hosted that. So they host to quite a variety of things from what I hear/see. Good luck on your search for the right anemone.

actually I was wanting to get a clown or 2 and no anenome's.. you just always see clowns on anenome's.. so was not sure if it would be nice or not to put them in a tank without any. It sounds like that is okay though. Thank you. My tank is still in the building phase, have most of the equipment, finishing up the stand build and sump.. be a few weeks before I even get water in the tank. Was just curious about clowns, as I think they are cute and my daughter would love a couple

My false percs use Xenia just fine. Good thing, since I don't have the lighting for an anemone. Plus, that weed is finely useful for something!

In fact, just having two clowns and no anenome will actually be more entertaining. The relationship between a mated pair of clowns is never dull and this is when they live up to their names.

Mine hosted in a Leather Coral and have stayed there ever since, completely ignoring the Bubble Tip Anemone!
The BTA eventually succumbed to a powerhead and I will never get another one, they were nothing but trouble. Leather Corals, are conveniently one of the easiest to keep, in my opinion look incredible + will never move/eat one of your other fish! Once your tank is stable etc and you have ok lighting (my leather coral was fine on my original 2x T8 lights) get a leather coral, even if they don't host it will still look nice.

We just pulled our GTB Anenome out of our system. The Maroon Clown we have was always pushing at it and hiding in it .. 'all the time'. We never really got to see him much. I know, I know, thats what they are supposed to do but well clowns are a neat looking fish and it will be nice to actually get to see it more.
A side note : The clown was always digging in our sand bed making room for the anenome.. made a huge mess of the bed and everything else around it.. including pushing corals etc off there perches. They are very strong lil buggers.. that behavior gets old really quick.
