Aqua Medic lighting question.......
Leaning toward purchasing two of these for my prop grow out tank that is 48"x30"x12" It is the Aqua Medic OceanLight 250W DE XQI 10k. Anyone have any experience with this company or these lights? Who has the best price for them? |

very good lights.I have the 150 watt.I am very happy with them. The ballast has a fan.The pendants are small.I got them from marine depot.Hello lights was cheaper but you had to pay shipping so with marine depot $175 is free.It ends up costing the same.Maybe mention this to hello lights. If you get them shipped for free you will find it cheaper at hello.

Steve, got any pictures? How is the coverage. My prop tank is 30" front to back, granted it doesn't need to cover the entire thing as I canput lower light corals around the edges but I do want some coverage.

Yes I think 1 250 on a 30 inch long tank would be fine. Oh yeah I got the 20K bulb and love it. Hello lights had them on sale may still do |

no the tank is 48" long and 30" wide, I'm planning on two 250w units. My concern wasn't the length but rather the 30" width....close up picts would be great.

the 2 questions
ok sorry here the answers to those 2 questions. The 30 inch width will be fine with 2 of these. Very good in my guess. You can adjust the spreak of the light with these small wings they enclose.
The hanging set-up comes with the light and is very nice and easily adjustable |

Ya.... so really if I get two, they each only need to cover 30" x 24".
I love the clean look of these fixtures as they will be hanging in our second family room, AKA finished basement. Is there any light spill from the unit other than what comes out the bottom toward the corals? In other words does light come through the vents or anythinglike that? |

no
not the vents but the two long sides will let the light spread (like you would want for the length. I would guess 30 x 30 would be a good area for them to cover. The one open side I have a shield so light doesn't bleed out. The extra room to spread would work great INMO.
I need pics I tries top draw it and it didn't work |

I have the 250w as well, love it. Need to pick up one more when I get the new 75 going.
I do not like the AB 20k that I originally got with it, since moving onto the ph14k ive seen much better growth and color out of my coral, mostly sps though.

ahhh ok. you have the old style. But I get the idea. Looks like the light does bleed through the louvers on the side a little. That's what I was asking. The new ones look like the picture above.

note sure
I think it is the new style the "blinders" on the sides can come on or off. That may be why it looks different. I have only had it 6 months or so. It is for my soft coral tank and I like the 20k. That is personal preference though.
The bleed of light doesn't come through the blinders but under. They come down an inch longer on the front and back, not sides. The vents give very little light as they are above the bulb in the fixture. The other reason you see lots of light is it reflecting off the top glass. |

I have this same fixture, the 250 HQI. I used the 20k XM bulb, and liked the color. It wasn't as blue as I thought it would be, but I like the more blue look.
Some problems reported problems with other fixtures, but it was due to an internal ballast I believe, causing heating issues within the fixture. Since this fixture has an external ballast, there should be no problem. I liked it. |
