Blue Encrusting Sponge on LR - will it survive?
I just got a mushroom rock that has some great looking blue sponge on it. I think it's basically a hitch-hiker.
Anything I need to know about how to keep it healthy? 46 Bow 130 W Current PC's 50 Lbs LR Tunze 9005 Skimmer Rena XP1 canister filter (provides 200 gph flow) 1 other 230gph powerhead (Maxi-Jet). No sump/ fuge Thanks. |

high flow right near it. will work. to keep it alive. I have a purple/blue ish sponge that I have had in my tank for over a year. It gets a decent flow almost all the time. it is directly under the intake to my refugium.

They feed on bacteria and similar-sized food items most often, I think. Some have photosynthetic symbionts, too.

High flow and regular feedings of DT's Phytoplankton should keep it going.

For sponges, your lack of a sump/fuge is a good thing. They like water with more nutrients in it.
Usually sponges like shady areas. It would be best if you could duplicate the lighting conditions and placement of the tank it came from. Blue sponges can tolerate brighter lighting than other types. Best of luck, Roy |

I have a LOT of neon green/yellowish sponges that have been in my tank for about three years. I have done nothing special for them, started with one, and they have reproduced like mad!
