what is prefilter for?

Ive got Proclear 75 filter with prefilter. I was trying to find something about prefilters but everything is make me more confused. What is the purpose of prefilter? What does it do and what is +/- does it have?

I can't find any information on that particular prefilter, but they usually are a mechanical filter, like a foam pad. They serve to remove large chunks of detritus from the water, keeping it from building up in the wet-dry area itself. Does that sound like what you have?
