Chemi-Clean, any precautions I should take?
I have recently had a really bad "red-slime" bloom in my tank, it's growing all over my sand, rocks, corals, some of my mushrooms are even detaching from the rocks due to the irratation of the slime and I have been trying to naturally remove it from my tank (ie. removing as much of it as possible, weekly 10-20% water changes, etc.) and it only seems to be spreading even more. I have read about Chemi-Clean, adding it and doing a large water change the next day and was wondering if there are any precautions I should take before dosing it. I have mushrooms, ricordia, xenia, anthelias, lots of zoo's, frogspawn, clam, sps frag, blastos, gonipora, etc. in my tank and I don't want any of them to be harmed in the process of overcoming this cyno problem. I would just like a few comments/suggestions and feedback on this product, aswell as precautionary measures I should take before using it. I have had no sucess finding it in the lfs near me, nor on some of the online retailers, would also like to know where I can purchase it.
I greatly appreciate all comments and suggestions, thanks in advance, -Mike C. aka ZURCSREEF |

I used it as directed on the bottle.
Just turn off your skimmer while using it and add an airstone(since it depletes 02 in the tank), then add carbon and do a WC. Thats all I did and things were OK

It doesn't harm clams. I just dosed the other day and my clam is just fine. I got the idea from a buddy of mine (ChrisAggie) who has 4 clams (none injured). It works great. All the nasty stuff was gone the next morning.

I have red slime algae growing only in my refugium, not in my display tank. Should I turn off the refugium pump for a day and treat the refugium with chemi-clean? Or just treat the whole system?

I have a mixed reef, including a clam. The only precaution i did was adding the airstone to help with O2. I left it in the tank for 2 days, turned my skimmer on the 3rd day and added carbon along with a 25% WC. The cyno disappeared overnight. But i wanted to be certain it was all gone.
No side effects at all, no losses. This stuff does what it claims.

I was able to find some at a LFS, only store around here that I could get it at was Dania Reef Life here in South Florida. I just finished adding the air stone on an old air pump I had and dosed 12 scoops of it into my 120, tank is already looking crystal clear in less then an hour, can't wait to see it without all the red slime every where, will be doing a 25 gallon water change tomorrow. Thanks everyone who commented/suggested,

Was I suppose to run sumpless even though I don't have carbon or any other chemical filtration in my sump? I currently have my skimmer and uv sterilizer off and only my sump running with the powerheads in my tank. Is this ok?

Since this stuff only grows in my refugium, should I just turn off the refugium pump and only treat that? Or should I treat the whole system?

I didn't follow the directions. My LFS said they've used it in the past and they have very impressive display tanks w/ everything in them. They told me to turn off the skimmer and dose the amount on the bottle for 3 consecutive days instead of one day and then wait. I dosed 3 days in a row, with skimmer off and no airstone and no problems. The stuff whithered away, I grabbed it out as it was dying, did a water change, skimmer back on that was it. Had a very mild case of it come back one more time since, did the same procedure. Haven't seen it again.
