I have 2 powerheads in my 55 gallon tank on each side about half way down. They are the ZooMed Rotating pumps so they do fine in my tank for providing enough current threw out the tank...

You will need to do a bit of experimentation, IMO, because rock placement makes a lot of difference to the flow patterns in the tank.

Just make sure that you place them so that you have adequate flow around all of your rock structure. I would provide pictures, but my new tank is not there yet.

I just dismantled my 55g but my setup for powerheads was 3 MJ 600's hooked to a natural wave timer. Mount 1 powerhead in each corner facing along the back of the tank and angled slightly down to cause the water to circulate behind your rock work. The 3rd powerhead gets placed in the back center of the tank. You cut the outlet of the MJ off close to the base causing a wide flow pattern and plug all three into the wave timer. The reason for mod of the center powerhead is because of the wave timer. When the timer cycles on and off, the impeller will change direction with each new cycle causing the flow from the power head to change from a left flow to a right flow. I used 600's because I was using a 6" DSB and 600's were not strong enough to disturb my bed. If you are going shallow or BB Get it rockin with MJ 1200's! I hooked one up to the center once and it blew the sand all over the place.
If you want to save a few bucks on a wave timer, you might look into DJ light timers. Same thing and usually cheaper.
I likme my natural wave and used it when setting up my new29g BB. I run 1 MJ1200 and 1 MJ 900 and my corals love the flow.
