OpenwatersSoCal,
To Reef Central Depends on what you like to see. Fish that swim, color, small.... etc. Personally, I like clown fish.

I have a flame hawkfish that doesnt bother anything else. I also have a yellow fin fairy wrase. Both fish seem to be reef safe, cool looking and non-aggressive.

Remember if you are new here that you will get a lot of opinions that are not always the best advise. IMO...I will be getting a percula clownfish, tang (of some sort) , and a six line wrasse sometime this May when I am comfortable with my new tanks parameters. Look at a fishes appearence and decide which ones you like by looks. After doing that take the group you like and decide which is best as far as territoriality, disease problems(or not), and reef compatibility.

After reading my post I do not want to sound too negative. I learned just about everything I know from the very knowledgable and helpful members and staff here on RC. Do some searching here and also it may even be easier to pick up a good book from the library on Marine Fish. You get nice pictures side by side with some good info.

yeah I know everyone has there likes and dislikes....got than vibe from just going to diff fish shops even. just kinda feeling out the waters.
think we are to stick with a doing a fish/invert tank with about 3-4 diff plant/coral types. not going to do a full reef tank. i know this is "reef central" hope thats ok if i still chat on here =P I really like the Hippo tangs alos but i heard its not a good idea to mix tangs unless you have a LARGE tank. Think we will add a clown in a few weeks (heard its best to space out adding new fish by 2 weeks to give the tank time to ajust) Right now I have the job of removing 3 unwanted damselfish , got one netted out today but they are "dam" fast. Going to try to cut a water bottle and trick them with food to swim in it next. |

lvpd186, I noticed in OpenwatersSoCal info that they have shrimp. A flame hawkfish can make a tasty meal of a shrimp. I do agree that hawkfish in general are cool to watch, you just have to be carful what you mix.

Konadog, I've heard that hawkfish can and will eat shrimp and small crust. but so far I havent had any problems. I have a cleaner shrip and several blue-legged hermit crabs and my hawkfish hasn't touched any of them. Maybe I'm just lucky!
