What test kit are you using? and what does the instructions for the kit say?

With my kit, I have test tubes it came with, I fill to the line, add the reagent and wait 5 min. For NitrAtes it's a little different, first off it's 2 reagents and the method is a little diff. I add 5 drops from bottle 1 and shake the tube for a min, then I need to shake the bottle for agent 2 vigorously(sp?) for 30 seconds, then add 5 drops to the tube and then shake the tube hard for a min....

If I do that i get readings that are in line with what my LFS read, if I don't i get readings all over the chart.
Your test kit will have the instructions, follow them and see what happens
