i have a 3 to 4 inch deep snadbed with chaetomorpha algae in there. i would suggest getting the chaeto because it is low maintenance. the dark side of the algae doesnt die, it wont foul up the water and make it seem yellow and some other algaes release their eggs and sperm and this can really harm the chemistry of the water. you can put live rock rubble in there as well. and pretty much set up like a smaller tank if you wish. just put alot of detritovores in there and things that DO NOT disturb the sandbed.
