Hydrogen Sulfide??
I am wondering if anyone can tell me if I have a hydrogen sulfide problem. I have a brand new 125 gallon tank that I cured live rock in. During the process I had some algae growth on the bare tank bottom and some detrius accumulation. After curing the rock, I vacuumed the detrius as much as possible and put about 3 inches of 1-2mm aragonite sand on the algae covered bottom. Yesterday I noticed bubbles coming up from the sand. Might they be hydrogen sulfide bubbles from the decomposition of the algae OR could they be simply nitrogen bubbles as from a DSB? (I do not notice a smell from the bubbles) Also, it has been 2 weeks since I put the substrate in the tank. There are no fish in the tank yet, but I've heard mixed views on the toxicity of hydrogen sulfide. I'd rather be safe. Thanks for any help.

More than likely it is free nitrogen.

Even in very low concentrations H2S has a distict odor of rotten eggs - the plus side being if you can smell it it is in low enough concentration to not be overly dangerous. It is unlikely that you have H2S and more likely it is free nitrogen
