Overflow
Hi,
I'm making a custom made 100 G tank I will have sump below the tank in the stand which will contain the skimmer, and refugium in addition to the returm pump section. My return pump will be an ocean runner giving 2500 litres per hour (will get reduced due to height and tubing elbows...) water will flow to the tank in a 3/4" tube. do you think a 1" tube would be enough for water flowing back or should I add a 3/4 " backup to it? also what size of overflow box would you suggest? Do you think a 10'x10' built in overflow will fit the tube taking water out and in the tank with the durso for the 1" tubing? if I am to add a 3rd pipe to it how large do you think i should make it? also what water level inside the overflow do you think i should keep? is there any effect to water level on the noise level? any pics will be greatly appreciated too |

You might try this calaulator . It's found on the left side of the Reef Central home page, along with other calculators.

I think you are going to be recommended to really upgrade your pipe size. Just for comparison, I have a 37g with 10g sump, and I am using a 3/4" return that Y's and a 1" drain. The drain isnt really keeping up too well. Im running a mag7 which is a little overkill. I think it might be a good idea to double the return size for a drain. So if you have 1" returns, maybe go with 2" worth of drains. Maybe some more people will 'pipe' up...lol, sorry. I just hate having my drain hold me back on return water. Im about to bump it up to 1.25-1.5".

Go with 1in tubing, it is a lot nicer, I have a 29 with 15 sump, and I have 1in pvc and mag 7 through SCWD.
If you want to try a SCWD i have a lot of good mods to make them a lot better and i could pm you if you want me to. Good luck |

I have two 1-1/4" overflows on my 100-gal, and they run close to full capacity. Return is a SEN900 through a 3/4" line and a seaswirl.

A SCWD is a "switching current water directer". It is a kind of wavemaker, with my mods you wouldny have to use flexible tubing, you can use threaded pvc, and I also made the holes bigger for more flow.SCWD
Mine works great now, and makes decient waves. |
