basement sump questions
my 120g is coming soon, and i want to have the sump in the basement
it will have two m should i get an external or submerged pump?.....head will be about 12 feet....any suggestions or ones to stay away from? could I use a SCWD to alternate the currents in the returns? or would it decrease the return flow too much when 12 feet higher than the pump? |

Set up my basement sump about a month ago. I used a mak 4 external pump and 1.5" flex tube for plumbing. Couldn't be happier. Don't know too much about SCWD but know a place with a great price on flex pipe. Did a ton of research and found these guys to be the least expensive. Here's a link. http://flexpvc.com

I moved my sump to the basement over a year ago and switched from two Mag 9.5's to two Mag 18's to correct for the head. I put my sump on a table I build so the additional head was only about 6 feet giving me a total head of about 12 feet. I have had no problems with the Mag 18 and the additional heat they produce has not been noticed since the basement is cool enough that my normal temps went down. Also since the equipment is in the basement now, I have hooked up a line to the house waste line to make water changes a breeze. I can post some pics of my sump system if you want me to.

I'd suggest a pressure rated external pump, like Blueline, Iwaki or GRI. I have the GRI 520 which is plenty from the basement with a good 12 ft head pressure.
The SQWD will drop your GPH a great deal, and is not very safe under pressure. Take a look at the Ocean Motions products, I've got the OM 4 way, it's built like a tank. http://www.oceansmotions.com/store/?...552791f190bebe John

or try a sequence pump would probably be ok with a dart for a 120.
