white coralline...?
i asked before and get a different answer from everyone. my lfs gets in uncured lr... sits in a big tank under normal shop lighting, a wimpy skimmer, and powerheads. sits there for several days and lr looks great with a buttload of different color coralline, and no smell at all. i get some home, place in my tank, and within 36 hrs, it has all turned white.
what is your opinion: alive or dead? could the lighting change be a factor? if it's dead, does it come back to life regaining it's color, or does new coralline grow on top of it? |

sounds like the coralline is just adjusting to your lights. its fairly common for coralline to turn white after transfering to a new tank/lights. the color should come back withen a few weeks, and the coralline should start spreading shortly after.

I think the shock of changing tanks does it. The two tanks I have started new have done the same thing. Since my tanks have cycled now, when I add LR it doesnt bleach. Im not sure if it changes colors or grows on top. It looks like it does some of both to me.

its been my experience that coraline will turn white when it is exposed directly to air. Some of it will grow back, but new coraline will grow over the old.

corraline will eventually grow over it again. a year from now you'll be tired of scraping it off your glass.

Coraline turns white and dies when it's exposed to air mainly. I've had some on my glass go white for unknown reasons though. Don't know if you have crabs and snails in your tank but they're a perfect example. Some always have coraline growing on their shells. Others, take a stroll on equipment out of the water for a while and you'll see the coraline on their shells turn completely white.
