pH monitor question

Hello,

I just got a new hand-held pH Monitor. It shows that my tap water is 5.68 (which I don't think is possible) and my reef tank is 7.35. How far out of calibration can these things be? Can these be out by more than 1.0 of pH?

I will have to get some calibration solution this week but I just wanted to make sure this unit wasn't defective first.

If you haven't calibrated it yet, the readings are meaningless.
