Where to buy pickeling lime in bulk? (50lbs sack)

Just wanted to know where I can buy pickeling lime in the 50lbs sack? I have started adding kalkwasser to my top off to work in conjunction with my calc reactor. I see p/lime will be a lot cheaper in the long run. Also how much to you add to water for aquarium use? Thanks

You can order Mrs Wages by the case pretty cheap. Less than $4 per jar. Its pure food grade. I believe lime acts like a dessicant so the smaller containers might stay good longer.

But if you want a 50 pound bag, you probably can't get pickling lime but you can get regular lime at garden centers.

I buy 50 lb bags of hydrated lime, (calcium hydroxide) from a farm co-op. Farmers use it's high pH to control bacteria by spreading it on the barn floor.

I'd check out a restaurant supply place. Lime gets used in cooking. Tortillas, for example.

I would use food grade and not agricultural stuff myself. The stuff is pretty cheap to start with and a pound goes a pretty good distance so why risk contaminates that are ok for dirt and not eating. I also use Mrs Wages

First of all, Mrs Wages and any like product is not available in Canada.
I started by purchasing calcium hydroxide from the pharmacy but they kept putting the price up so it was as bad as the LFS prices. Like now, it's around $30 a lb and I'd use that in about 10 days.
With the amount I use, that's too much so I started investigating the chemical and found the farm supply selling it to farmers.
I checked with the manufacture for the spec sheet and could find nothing that would be a problem so I've been using it ever since. I'm just finishing my 7th bag, 5 at 25 kilo's and the last two at 20 kilo's each.
I have a lot of tanks totaling 590g plus the sumps, and average about 22 litres of lime water daily. After all these years, I've had no problem with this product.
I did start with a small tank at first for quite a while before trying it on my other tanks. (don't remember how long the trial period was but it was for more than six months)
Anyway, what I'm getting at is, don't condemn the product because of it's related association (farm use) without doing a little investigation, as it can turn into a bonus many times.

Well you could take that marvelous boring ride to Detroit. (I have been through Loundon at least 100 times going to Woodstock there)
This company has a plant in Detroit (major lime producer) but I bet they can give you some outlets that will sell to you. If you can not call the states, just PM me back and I will call them monday AM for you.

Thanks for the offer but pickling lime is not allowed as such in Canada for some reason.
Anyway, I've been using this product for so many years I see no need to use anything more expensive, and it comes from a major producer within a very short drive from London in Beachville.

How do you mix the hydrated lime?
Vauge, sorry, Here's a better way to ask the question..
What ratio do you mix at? KG/Liter or however you regulate/proportion it.

Thank you.

Mrs Wages can be purchased right online http://store.yahoo.com/mrswages/

They do have product in stores but you will have to search your area for "Canning Supplies"

That article discusses how much lime to add, etc.

Local grocery store (food lion) sells Mrs Wages for $3.29. I would also like to find it in bulk.
