Seio pumps not starting?

I have seen alot of talk on RC about the Seio's not starting or restarting. If it does not restart what does it do, overheat, melt or trip the GFCI? I want to replace a few of the MJ 900's in my tank, I have four. It looks like the Seio will give more flow and less watts.

I'm not sure what they do when they don't restart -- I think they just don't restart. The same thing happens with Tunze but they have an alarm to alert you that it isn't starting. I haven't had any problems with my seio 820's. Since you have maxijets, you could consider doing the maxi-mod if you have the tools, the interest and the spare time. My club tried it (almost everyone in the club) and it was mostly a failure IMO. Many people have had good luck with that, though, and they do produce a lot of flow. IMO, for a 50, a couple of Seio 820's would be nice.

I have used 2 seio 620's on my 58 gallon for over a year with no problems. I clean them about every 6 months. I have never had a restart problem with them.

I have 2 1100s in my 75 gallon, and they ocasionally won't restart. If you have the nozzle part screwed on too tight they might not resart as often. I keep mine loose and if one doesn't restart, I just give it a few bangs with a turkey baster and it fires right up.

Not a big fan of these. I used 3 in my reef and they had to be cleaned and soaked in vinegar every week or they wouldn't work (Ca and kalk reactors) I had one burn up just like a Rio but it didn't pollute the tank like the Rio did. Most of the pumps that I have used in the past that have ceramic shafts and ceramic guides will lock up on me.

FWIW, I bought one of those MJ propeller mods that turn the MJ1200 into a screaming pump. I think its like 1200 gph. These last a lot longer in the tank then the Seio's do

If they don't immediatly restart, just unplug it for a few seconds and plug it in again, may take a couple trys in some cases.

I have 2 820s i swap out on my 29gal. They always have to be taken apart and i have to manually spin the impeller to get it to start. I have to clean them at least once a month (heavy kalk/alk supplementing). Occasionally i'll get home and its just stopped. They get pretty hot when they stop for an entire day. One time i got home and it was stopped, i pulled it from the tank and the impeller area was so hot it was steaming. That one never restarted and i sent it back to TAAM who fixed it and sent it back only charge was shipping one way.

The maxijet mod is great. Very easy as well. I finished up the mod on a MJ600 and it does more flow than the 820 using half the wattage.

I'm sorry but I kind of LOL every time I read about somebody using Seio pumps for years without problems. I recall saying the same thing about Rio pumps 5+ years ago

You need to have a MJ1200 with this mod. They say you can diy it for about half the cost. I'm all for DIY, I just have better things to do right now. http://www.reefdom.com/products.asp?cat=106

I wasn't trying to cut on anyone... just a little joke... with 3 kids... (3 1/2 year old, 14 month old, 2 month old)... I have very little DIY time, but do like DIY projects (and I am also cheap )... maybe in about 5 more years...

I was serious about the time for the mod though??

[off topic]I think my Highschool played Yucaipa's highschool in sports-- I grew up in Riverside (La Sierra)-- this was back in the 80s.... I seem to remember beating you guys in track , and you guys probably beat us in everything else.. [/off topic]

I guess if you have all the parts and tools you need you can probably put one together pretty fast. It probably takes 10x longer to order the parts or god forbid you have to buy gas to go get em.

You could buy 3 more MJ1200 for the price of that mod but its going to take about 5 of them to equal the flow.

I'm all for DIY, I just spent 30K on parts to build a motorcycle. I just wasn't going to spend MY time on this DIY project. IMO, either you DIY or buy the mod its a much better pump then the Sieo's.

I haven't tried this with a Seio but I took a Rio 2100 and a Hyperflow 10 and locked up the impellors and left them plugged in dry for just over 30 hours. The 10 was a little warmer than the 2100 but neither got as hot as I would have expected. I pulled my high tech impellor block (plastic knife) out of the 2100 and it took off spinning away. I would have thought it would have gotten hot enough for the thermal protection circuit to kick in. The HF 10 had to cool down before it would run again.

With the Seio being a lower wattage pump I would suspect they would have to short out to put much heat in the water. I am going to open up the Rio's to see if there is anything that would release any kind of oil into the water. TAAM claims there is nothing in there, we will see.

You ever try contacting TAAM about it? They seem to be pretty good about making things right on these when people have an issue.
