mh light

can mushroom and zoos survive under mh light? is it too much?

i just got a 90gal tank. should i buy a compact flurocent light? or should i build one mh light myself? i am think about some hard corals and some soft corals. which light works better?

they should be fine under MH lights. just try and put them into a shaded area and lower on the rocks to reduce the amount of light they get.

now. i never build a light myself before. so i was wondering what do i really need?
1. bulb
2. reflector
3. ballast

what else?

people who build their own light out there. do you guys use the pc light too (for the actinic)?

leesanhua,

to DYI a MH light, you need:

-ballast
-bulb
-reflector
-socket (mogul or DE socket)


I'm using T5s for my actinics. I like them alot better than PCs.

I prefer URI Super Actinic VHOs over both PC and T5 for actinic supplementation. The best color available.

Yes. Mogul is single ended with the large sized threads such as MH, high pressure sodium and some old fashioned regular bulbs.

but the VHO has low watt. i thought we suppose have high watt to keep the coral alive?

DE is probably a little more efficient due to the design of the reflectors. VHO is not low watt, a 4' bulb is 110watts so 2x250 MH and 2x110 VHO is 720 watts over a 90G tank.
