Who else doesn't use fuge/sump?

I'm not advocating this, people. I'm just wondering how small of a minority I'm in.

I used to run one for six months as a reef, but I've had many others. It takes proper maintenance and extra special planning on livestock for this to be done correctly and successfully.

I checked out a few on some of the sponsor sites. It looks doable. This thread has taken a strange turn.

I run a sump, not a fuge though. I hope to rid all my nitrates with a phosphate reactor with de nitrate in it, 1 maybe 2, we'll see how it goes.

I have a 40 breeder without a sump or fuge. I have a hang-on skimmer, and a Aqua Clear 110 with rock rubble in it. I also have a phosban reactor that usually runs carbon, but I bought phosban to eventually try it. Honestly... without the skimmer I think the tank would plummet health-wise.

I do have plans of adding a display refugium to the the 40g, but won't do that until I move in a year (will get both tanks drilled). Technically the tank will still be sumpless.

Depends on what you want to keep.
Some things are more tolerant to dirty water.
Some things like mandarins need pods and a fuge really helps achieve that.
I've run w/out a sump/fuge for years, but I know my tank could be healthier with one, working on it right now.
I have a mandarin, so now I have a fuge w/ LR ruble and chaeto

what are the "main" reasons to use a sump ?

1)i think is there used to be no good options for hang on skimmers so if you wanted a real skimmer you needed a sump , The deltec hang on solved that.

2) Increased the systems total water volume . Get a bigger tank ?

3) fuge , how not as good but there are hang on fuges from CPR and knockoffs.

Sump may be the best way but it certainly isn't required for success.

Well, sump/fuge could hold lots of macro keeping nitrates down among other things

Does a hang on fuge make much of a difference for water quality or is it more for pod breeding?

When I had high nitrates, like 40, I did a few things do bring them down, and one of those things was a HO fuge w/ chaeto.
I can't say how much of a difference that alone made, but my trates are down.
I used to have to clean green algae off glass like every 2 days, the chaeto definitely helped w/ that.
I later added ruble for a pod pile.
Of course you can get by w/out one, but as time goes I like to add every little thing I can to make my tank better.

I do have a sump, but there isn't anything in there that can work for a tank only setup. Sumps just take all of the junk you need and gives it a home out of sight. I had a tank only setup for a long time and was very successful!

Well, there is a benefit from more water volume, more area for LR
