my new 90 gallon tank is coming soon. i was thinking about getting a MH light.
should i DIY? or buy the complete set? other than the price differences. is DIY better than the complete set? or they are the same?

They are about the same if you are going to mount it on the inside of a canopy. If you don't have a canopy, I would suggest getting a premade set. It would be more expensive. Retrofit, IMO is better though.

I liked building mine. IT took me about 1 week to gather the necessary parts (ballasts, sockets, cords...etc.) And about 1 day to build my canopy, add the fans, and mount the reflectors and lights.
Plus since I started with 2 x 175w MH's, now that I want to upgrade, I just bought 2 250w ballasts and all I have to do is swith the wires and change bulbs and PRESTO! Just my .02 cents |
