I have never used it but have heard that it does nothing more than adding calcium would.

It adds two forms of calcium, one dissolved for instant use, and one form that breaks down slower. It also has magnesium, which is necessary for the coralline to grow. It seems to have boosted my growth on a tank thats a few months old. The snails also seem to really benefit from it, as they have a lot of growth visible now.

I think it worked in my tank.
But cant compare it to my tank if I had not used it naturally.

I used it for a short while, but didn't like the results. IMO it kind of gave things an "artificial" purple look - especially my snails. My biggest concern was the lack of listed ingredients. Not knowing what's in it, I didn't know what to test for. I'm not saying PU does any harm. But I couldn't use it to manage my Ca, Alk and Mg.

Yea, it works but so does using RC salt and using lime water. I find just using RC salt and adding lime water keeps the calcium more stable and higher then just adding purple up and IO salt for example.

Ive used PU, and nothing...

As previously said, Ca+Alk+Mg would do the trick. As far as solid part of PU goes, coraline, corals, etc.. take only soluble Ca (ion Ca++). For solid aragonite to dissolve one must drop pH level to where no reef would survive.

I'd like to tag along, too. I've been thinking about using PU in my FOWLR because I'd like to boost my coraline but I don't have a reef set up. Will it drop pH like just adding calcium (I think) will?

Pete and Heather just sit tight, with PU or any other CA/Alk boosters coraline algae still grows slowly. It is its nature, very slow growth. Just keep Ca+Alk+Mg in check and turn lights on

I use coralline stimulator by Florida aqua farms inc. and I've had fantastic results. My tanks been up for about a month and i've already got beautiful coralline all over my rocks. Great product def recommend.

I used it for a few months, hard to tell how it worked since I had nothing to compare it to.

New tank - first week

After 3 months

5 months

Cprowler- Very nice tank! What kind of camera are you using? Also, what kind of rock is that?

I have used both PU and Kalk. I think Kalk works much better and I think it is more stable then PU. Also, if I remember right, PU adds cal. but it does not have any kind of buffer so you have to keep an eye on your ph and alk levels.

B-Ionic 1 & 2 has worked for me. I know I can test for what I am adding, and know exactly how much is needed. Corraline is growing slowly, but growing, corals are like weeds, and I swear some of my snalis have doubled in size.

If you have lots of need for Ca and Alk, Randy Holmes has a cheap yet effective Recipe. I am using it and very happy with the results. Coral growth took off amazingly and I didn't go broke

Actually I don't add anything just do normal once a week or every two weeks with INSTANT OCEAN REEF CRYSTALS the growth is slow but its definatly there! Oh yeah and Stronium and little Iodine and sometimes some extra Calcium. For the corals and inverts. Every now and then I will add a very very small ammount of iron for the Smooth Red Kelp.
