Operation 40 Breeder

Hello all, I dont usually post on Reef central because until now I've always had a nano tank. But I am in the process of upgrading to a 40 gallon breeder. So I figured might as well upgrade sites as well!

Thats it right there, I have it drilled as you can tell and painted black for the background. I have the middle hole with a 1.5" bulkhead and two 3/4" bulkheads on both other sides w/ loc-line fittings.
For a sump I am going to be using either a 20g long or a 29g, whichever I receive from friends first. This is the stand that I will be using, it is just the AGA black pine stand, nothing special... I think there is room for a 29g in there

[/IMG] I am going to have to remove the center brace in from the top in order to fit the tank down into the stand for my sump/fuge and than put it back on which may be a pain.
I have already made my over flow box using 1/4" black acrylic and the demensions of that are 10X4 so it has decent surface area

I am going to use a CSS 65 for the skimmer and a mag 12 as a return just to insure I have plenty of flow. I will keep you all updated on the progress, please let me know of any questions comments or concerns with what I have done so far.

Looks great! What are you going to be putting into it? Stock list? About the center brace, IMO I think you could get away without having it at all. I know with the other stands for larger tanks like a 75 gallon, they don't have a center brace at least in the front. Doing great. Keep us updated.

I am thinking of just some different LPS and zoas softies and shrooms. I have about 50-60 lbs of LR already so Im good there, and as far as fish I have an Ocellaris, a Yellow headed Jawfish, and a Yellow watchmen goby... I dont know what else I want but we'll see

I finally finished up the over flow box, as soon as the glue is done doing its thing Im going to put it in my tank and than be good to go
what do you use to adhere the over flow box to the aquarium?

Just thought I'd talk a little more about whats going on... last night I managed to silicone the over flow box into its rightful place and allowed it to dry overnight and than did some silconing in the inside of the over flow and threw in about 30#s of aragonite.
for lighting I am going to use 3 PC fixtures... already have otherwise I would have gone t-5. But I will have a total of 260watts over top. I am going to put them all on timers so that all of the 10,000k are on for 9 hours and the actinic alone is on for an hour before and an hour after the 10,000k and than I have 3 moon lights coming on @ night. Along with running a reverse photo period on my fuge. which will only contain chaetomorpha and a DSB and some rubble and such.
In my current reef tank, I use red sea salt but am going to make the switch over to IO but use the rest of my red sea as well for the initial mixing. It stinks that I am unable to fill my tank until I silicone my baffles into place in my sump and do some plumbing because everything in the main tank is good to go! Again, when I get back from class I'll post some more pictures of the progress thats been made

So this 40 gallon breeder is just the name of the tank shape, not that you're going to actually use it to breed fish, correct?

correct, a 40 breeder is more of a custom size tank that all glass does, essentially it has a much larger foot print than the average tank, it is 36X18X16, it has the benefits of a 20 gallon long with it being real short and such but also has a huge foot print so there are a lot of options for rockwork and the works. I plan on making kind of a U type formation with a big open sand bed in the middle for my jawfish

well last night my BTA decided to take a little trip for the first time in about 6 months and to land right ontop of my calastrea not cool at all, so I decided that in order to do a nice reef and not worry about my nem Im going to take him back, its not like my clown was hosting in him or anything, just a porcelain crab, which will be sad to not see him anymore but I dont want my corals getting stung. this happend right after I upgraded my lights but I still dont want to mess w/ all of that. Next matter of business, I am receiving a DAS skimmer from a friend that has never been opened or anything like that for $0 so I ont have to buy one, this is working out nicely so far I also received my mag 12 from this friend. I am also going to get rid of my alleni damsel and yellow watchmen because the watchmen all of a sudden has taken to hating the girlfriends fish (nemo) and attacking him any time he swims anywhere close, this will give me a good opurtunity to get my rare fish and purchase a yasha haze... thats all of the news for now, I have finals on monday so after that the work on the tank is going to be full force starting tuesday and I will get more pictures up... so far I think all I need to buy is two timers, a lot of plumbing but I have the expensive stuff out of the way, a glass top and to make my sump, not to bad

I have a 40 breeder with 2 Percs and a Royal Gramma. They get along well. I've read that the Dottybacks can be agressive. Some times the Gramma swims along with the Clowns. Pretty cool. Be careful with the bioload. Might / might not be alot in a 40.

I've decided on the first four fish listed for sure and than a swiss guard basslet as my not so common fish... If I can find a helfrici I will get that as well instead of the firefish, all of those fish are not to heavy on the bio load plus my skimmer is rated for over a hundred gallons and is basically the same thing as a deltec and is comparable to a euro reef... I think it will be able to handle all of that... plus I have quite a large amount of LR

well a lot has happened since my last post as far as decisions. I went with an oceanic model 1 sump and a reef octopus 150 Needle wheel skimmer. im not really going to have much for a "fuge" per say but I think Im going to fill my sump with a bunch of Live rock but that will come with time. I should receive the skimmer tuesday or wed and finish up my plumbing at that time as well. I know I am going to be keeping a blue spot jawfish in there but that is about all I know of for now
