is my temp too high?

my tank temp ranges from 83 degrees in the morning with the light off to about 85 degrees with the light on. is this too high? i don't even use a heater. I'm wondering if its the glass top trapping too much heat from the light. the light is only on 7 hours a day. are there alternatives to glass tops?

its a 90 gallon tank

I think 85 is a bit high. You should put a fan on your sump.

I agree. Get rid of the glass top. Your temp will drop by 3 or more degrees, and you will increase gas exchange.

It will be in the electrical section. It is used with flourescent lights to soften the light.

Just throw a fan on the sump and put eggcrate on the tank and you should be able to keep the tank nice and cool. HTH, Tim

At my local HD the eggcrate is by the wood for some reason - with various other covers for flourescent lighting...

Get all lids off the system, sump as well as top tank, except for eggcrate.

wouldnt that be bad then since it will reduce the light coming from my compact light?

My Coralife Aqua lights specifically state not to use without a glass cover for safety reasons

I have a newly set up tank with a glass canopy. I got temps of 87º so I installed a chiller. The temperature is stable now at 75º. My wood canopy has 384 watts of PC lighting about 2 inches from the glass and like Mikro stated, it is not recommended to run the lights over an open tank. I think I get plenty of gas exchange through my open sump and protein skimmer.

Mikro: Yeah, mine too. Hasn't hurt anything yet, though.

Mike90: As for interfering with your lighting. you can turn the eggcrate one way and it "difuses" the light or you can flip it over, and it actually directs the light into your tank.

If you can, save for a Chiller and make the purchase, it is worth it. JD

Get rid of the glass top and get egg crate or best yet, use nothing.

If you can't afford a chiller, have a fan blow at the top of your tank. That will cool it considerably.

Try and get your tank to about 78-80 if possible. Definately 85 is pretty high. I've had many of my corals bleach when the temp hits 82.

Mike
