Acrylic for UV shield?

I was just wondering if acrylic could be used to shield a 150w HQI? If not, what can I use? Whatever it is , it can be no more than 1/16" thick.

You need to use glass that is ment to block UV.

What type of glass would that be? Would tempered glass work?

They do make UV blocking acrylic but it wont take the heat from the bulb close up. I use it on all my tanks but it rests on supports on top of the tanks and not just under the bulb. I've taken to using these even under SE bulbs due to the quality issues some of the new bulbs might have. A broken outer glass on a SE bulb can do substantial UV damage to corals in short order.

For just under the bulb I'd use tempered glass. Any glass shop should be able to cut it for you and send it out to be tempered.

go to a framing shop and ask for UV blocking glass. if it's just a small piece like on most DE fixtures, it should be under 10 bux.

Thanks, I just went and got a piece, the only problem is the UV blocking agent is a sprayed on, crystal looking substance, so I was wondering if that would also block light transmission to my aquarium.
