The idea of protein skimming over the last 3 years...

I would like to share something that I think I've noticed, not sure if anyone else has. When I first started this hobby, about 3 years ago, I felt like the general consensus was that protein skimming was ONLY needed for reefs, and other hardcore tanks. The focus seemed to be purely on sumps. Now, most people would say that a protein skimmer is great to have on any tank, and that a protein skimmer and live rock filtration is a good setup. Also more people have hang on units.

Anyone else notice this rise to popularity with protein skimmers? Personally I would not run a tank without one (except a nano.)
