Denitrifier units

has anyone had any experience with denitrifier units?

I've been reading about the DSB-in-a-bucket setup and they sound.....hmmm...interesting to say the least. However I'm just learning about all the options here. I don't have a nitrate problem, but since I am a big DIYer, I am always looking to build and add units to my setup to prevent any future problems.

any thoughts?

I had a opaque box (shoebox size) with as much airline tubing stuffed in it as possible back in 1989. Set it up for about 1 drip/second. All the rage back then on Fish-Only tanks. Exit water did read 0 (or untestable given my kit) which proved it was working. Not enough to keep up however with feeding requirements of the tank.
