Just got back from collecting. Need ID please...

I was collecting some fish today in south florida and I caught a hi-hat, a unknown tang, a couple damsels, and a couple coral banded shrimp. Can someone please ID this tang and the damsels. The pic isnt great but it has blue on the bottom and the back fin is greenish. The body is kind of greyish. Are these tangs worth anything? I can catch hundreds of them if I wanted to.

nope. Why would fishing be illegal? Its just like throwing a pole out there and catching fish to eat off a pier or getty. A $15 license is all you need.

Getting animals is legal, collecting rock is not.

I have been researching and the only three tangs that are known to live in florida waters are the blue tang, ocean surgeon fish, and the doctor fish. I think what I caught may be a juvinile doctor fish. Here is it full grown...

Post At least they are hand caught............

This is a touchy subject, but at least these fish are hand caught, and cyanide is not being used. I have to admit I would be catching everything under the sun to put in my own tank, if I lived in Florida.
Nice fish!!!!!

There are plenty of fish you can collect legally. There is a full list of legally allowed fish to catch on the Florida state fish and game collector's listing. Don't know the link to it but I have seen it a few times here and there on RC. Someone has a link to it in a thread somewhere.

Everything in my tank is tank bread, aquacultured, fraged, or rescued from somone (ie the fish outgrew there old system or they were taking the system down). So yes, I do what I say....

jent46, while there is no need for self righteousness (not that you necessarily were being...) you should be proud that you have chosen to only take certain things which were not harvested directly. I have often felt guilty for fueling the market that rips living things off the reef where they are better left alone. (A moment of silence for my knowing and willing participation in a hobby that results in the countless deaths of living animals at the hands of both well meaning and careless aquarists.) On the other hand, I just am not willing to give up my little window into a world I might never otherwise have gotten to experience. And all who come into contact with my reef get to see and learn about some of the animals that live in the sea (trust me, much to the chagrin of visitors, I go endlessly and tirelessly on and on about all the factoids I know of each creature), hopefully inspiring them to learn even more and even lead them to help protect our oceans.

You have Stegastes leucosticta, Acanthurus bahianus (A. chirurgus has defined to faint vertical bars), and a juvenile Pareques acuminatus.

I was at a reef off of west palm beach. I used a plastic Jar for the tang and one of the damsels. Then I ran into a guy with a slurp gun that was out there. He let me use it and it was very easy! I could have brought back 50 fish if I wanted to but I only brought back 5.
